Potential Problems

* Culture of philanthropy varies in different countries
* It’s hard to find good leadership to start new chapters
* Hard to support new chapters nearby without healthy local chapters
* The bottleneck is going from one person being really excited → whole group

Ideas / Stories

* Minas Gerais started because Renato was living in Boston and encountered the idea, and wanted to bring it back to Minas Gerais. He was put in touch with Ana from the Rio chapter, who offered a lot of local support. It took him another year to actually finish putting together a group of trustees and get the chapter started.
* Yerevan started because Albert saw the Berlin chapter while hanging out at Betahaus. He brought the idea back to Yerevan and got a few other people who worked on a coworking space excited. They thought that $1000 for 10 people was too much, so they ended up trying for 20, then 30, then 40, then eventually 50 trustees. They have 3 to 4 “deans” to manage the process and do a pitch event with the top contenders.
* Be careful of how to frame the value proposition of Awesome Foundation—philanthropy less translatable than “get cool people together and support cool projects”.
* Natural vectors for spreading: hackerspaces and coworking spaces, other people who are naturally interested in gatherings of interesting people + supporting local projects.
* “If it’s big $$, people apply for $$. If it’s small $$, people apply for fun.”

Potential Solutions

* YouTube testimonials
* Case studies of how chapters get started
* Awesome Ambassador program
* Fledgling chapters page on the website
* Kit of resources (?) for putting together.
* Web updates
* Change the chapters list to sort by country first
* Revising the New Chapter Manual - have more concrete suggestions
* Throw a party and just get interested people together!
* Contact nearby local chapters → find regional ambassadors for each place.
* How do you translate Awesome?
* What are all the current translations and what do they really mean?
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=Taking_Awesome_Beyond_North_America&diff=220583Taking Awesome Beyond North America2016-03-05T20:31:10Z
Chrysaora:

* Send out the bid for host chapters next week (Subject: Awesome Summit 2014 - Next round)
* Spinning off the external day into a Summit - Lee-Sean is interested in helping out. TEDx
* Retrospective

Potential hosts
* Atlanta
* Orlando
* Chicago

Committee
* This year's:

Big Takeaway
* Start earlier, raise more money, share documentation.

Potential Sponsors
* Airlines? Looking for airline profile - what would it look like in your in-flight magazine?

Goals
* Fundraise to bring international people here.

Idea
* Suggest that chapters pool money to send people.
* Agenda published in advance OR share stuff from last year.
* Blog post of testimonials - gather tomorrow
* Encourage mini-Summits
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=Awesummit2014:IHAS&diff=220525Awesummit2014:IHAS2014-09-07T18:28:29Z
Chrysaora: Created page with "Attendees: Deana (Baltimore), Emily (Ottawa), Nikki (Seattle), Dionne (Atlanta), Kara (Boston), Asad (Kingston), Joel (Austin), Christina (NY) What is IHAS? * A nice suit you ca..."

Attendees: Deana (Baltimore), Emily (Ottawa), Nikki (Seattle), Dionne (Atlanta), Kara (Boston), Asad (Kingston), Joel (Austin), Christina (NY)

What is IHAS?
* A nice suit you can put on, not a separate business person.
* Scaffolding
* Serving lowest common denominator

Fiscal Sponsorship
* Right now lots of chapters need it just to get free beer etc.
* Community foundations have guidelines with what they'll typically fund but they'll tell you no.
* You'd have to define in the governance what kinds of projects you want.
* Maybe chapters could submit grants?
* There are nonprofits that are set up just to do fiscal agencies.

* You have to state that it's a fiscal agent--define types of grants you're willing to make.
* Hard to cut checks to people outside of the state. Accounting liability. You HAVE to have an audit and that's expensive.
* Deana: It's kind of a nightmare. Lots of IRS stuff around giving.

Succession
* Create a task of the things you normally do?
* Should IHAS just be the thing that runs the Summit?

Constraints
* Nobody works on it full-time.

* Rotating chairs.

* What if all the chapters donate one of their monthly grants to IHAS?
* Could go towards a metagrant for revitalizing the city?
* Could be used for general funds for the chapters.
* Finding people to start chapters in target cities and bring them to the Summit?

IHAS Responsibilities
* Website - paying maintenance costs, improving the website
* Documentation -
* Communication -
* Summit

Projects
* Figuring out some kind of shared resources
* Call-to-action video: trustee, chapter, application
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=Awesummit2014:Telling_Our_Story&diff=220524Awesummit2014:Telling Our Story2014-09-07T18:27:41Z
Chrysaora: Created page with "Attendees: Dave (london), Nikki (Seattle), Lee-Sean (NYC), Andrew (Liverpool), Jared (Palm Beach), John (Sarnia), Tung (New Orleans), Christina (NYC), Yasmin (Atlanta) * John: I..."

Attendees: Dave (london), Nikki (Seattle), Lee-Sean (NYC), Andrew (Liverpool), Jared (Palm Beach), John (Sarnia), Tung (New Orleans), Christina (NYC), Yasmin (Atlanta)

* John: Interested in keeping track of history and stories from a trustee perspective and a grantee perspective. Worried that we're losing track of history.
* Jared: This could be a successful mainstream book. Could be good lead generation.
* Nikki: We should be compiling some "best of"s - useful for giving talks and also for modeling best projects for new/struggling projects.
* Lee-Sean: There's a lot of oral stories that get passed down--how do we capture those?
* Yasmin: A timeline

What's the goal of improving our storytelling?
* Dave: cultural shift in how people think about changing the world
* Nikki: Improving the quality of applications and trustees
* Tung: Common assets for each chapter to pull from
* Lee-Sean: General public profile to get sponsorships, speaking engagements, raise awareness in general.
* Jared: Break down the messaging for different groups.
* Yasmin: Has there been an overall strategy to push Awesome Foundation out there?
* Christina: The original intent behind the open-ended nature of our messaging is to not scare people away by providing too many examples of what to do or not to do.

Balancing inspiration vs. scaring people away
* Tung: the different chapters exist in different capacities.
* Dave: how do we tell the full spectrum of the stories, not just the best of?
* Tung: Website was a barrier for New Orleans; when we went and interviewed people, we got lots of great ideas.
* Lee-Sean: Do you fund ideas or projects? Projects that we like and just need an extra bump, or actual things that are happening?

* Awesome ambassador idea - what to expect. A couple of chapters have Awesome Hours, but it's a lot of work.
* Tung: Probably 40% of applications have been coached or advised by a trustee.
* Nikki: We work hard on messaging what we prefer to fund, on the website. But most applicants just go straight to the application.
* Tung: could you force people to go through the chapter page--adding a little bit of friction?
* AwesomeFoundation.org chapter page is not a great place to talk about values.

Book of Awesome
* What are the main narratives?
* Yasmin: The story of awesome is still evolving. What will help is getting us out there. I think we need a 2-minute elevator pitch.
* Dave: I always tell it through stories.
* How do we decide what stories to tell?
* Three main parts: philosophy; history; projects.
* Projects: we may just need someone to pick these. The tyranny of photogenic projects.
* Philosophy: the hard part.
* What are the top points we want to tell?
* What's happening with all the chapters? We need a common something to keep building culture.
* What's really special with this community is that there's a clear central premise-10 people, $1000-but every chapter gets to define what it means for them to be a chapter.
* Do people really care?

Idea
* Episode-based serial? Like every 3 months there's a small publication.

Audiences for the Awesome Story
* Trustees
* Potential applicants
* Press/partners
* Chapters
* Other allies / movements

Potential Outputs:
- Book proposal for traditional publishing? Crowdfund projects?
- "Best of" collections.
- Chapter-specific messaging on the application form.
- 2-minute elevator pitch.
* Write a creative brief tomorrow.

* About Us

High-Level Questions
* Who are our audiences?
* What's relevant to each audiences?
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=Resources_and_References&diff=220507Resources and References2013-10-20T20:19:58Z
Chrysaora: /* Design References */

The Austin chapter really liked the SF postcards and some of the previous business card designs, so we made multiple versions so we could mix and match fronts and backs using both high-quality Moo prints and less-expensive Vistaprint prints. [http://wiki.awesomestudies.org/images/e/ec/AFAustinBusinessCardsPreview.pdf Here's a PDF preview of the six card designs.] We've provided the original Illustrator files in case other chapters want to just change the chapter location and URL to get started on their own. If you don't have an artist you work with, we hired local Austin artist [http://ahernpaul.com/ Paul Ahern] to make these for us.

As soon as you become a qualified annuitant to join Medicare that's the best thing for seniors. Nevertheless, everything you might have neglected in all your pleasure in having the ability to get health care at a fair cost is that anything that has to do with health care, including all elements of Medicare can be complicated. To be able to get merely a "dab" of quality that said you'll need to remove that phrase "confusing". So listed below are a couple of solutions for the consideration.

- The Medicare Handbook For 2013: It was delivered to you for grounds so don't ignore it; study it. It's all the responses to even the most trivial concerns. And if you still have trouble figuring it out, every state has a medical health insurance support program where you can get free and fast Medicare therapy via an 800 number. And don't be embarrassed; your "life raft" may have lots of passengers.

- As soon as you sign up for Medicare Part A which is your clinic coverage and ostensibly free, you'll have the option to just take the next step to Medicare Part B which is medical coverage; but it is not free. Hence, if the coverage you receive in Part A works for you, you're not necessary to incorporate Medicare Part B; it is an option but does include some coverage you may need. Also, if you decided not to just take the Part B strategy, sometimes, you may postpone your Medicare Part B without paying higher rates.

- But when you have Medicare Part A and Part B coverage but find your health requires still takes a Medicare additional or Medigap plan like Medicare Part D, it is a prescription medication option that pays for generic and brand-name prescription drugs. All you have to to accomplish is get online and do some old fashioned looking around for the best option that matches your allowance, like [http://winterlandinvestments.weebly.com just click the up coming article].
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=Main_Page&diff=50520Main Page2013-04-24T18:14:16Z
Chrysaora: Undo revision 49394 by Ssmicrrrundsddqw (talk)

= For Trustees =
=== Logging In ===
If you scroll to the very bottom of awesomefoundation.org, you will find links that say "About & Contact", "FAQ", and "Sign In". Click "Sign In" to access [http://www.awesomefoundation.org/sign_in?locale=en the login screen].

If you have an account associated with an active email address but you've forgotten your password, click on "Forgot your password?" below the pink sign-up button. You'll be prompted for the email address associated with the account, and you can get a link to reset your password emailed to you.

Please note: with the new awesomefoundation.org website, we've redone our account system--your old login and password may not work. The best thing to do if you are having trouble logging in is to either contact the Dean of your chapter or to email webmaster@awesomefoundation.org with your issue.

=== Changing Your Image ===
The picture associated with your account is automatically pulled from http://www.gravatar.com, a global avatar hosting system. Just create an account there with the email address you used to sign up to have your picture on our site! If you already have an account under a different email address, Gravatar will let you add this email address.

=== Edit Your Profile ===
In Dashboard, the very first option on your left sidebar should be “Edit My Profile”. If you click on that, you’ll be taken to a form that allows you to change the way your name is displayed, change your email address and password, and change the URL that your name is associated with on the Chapter Page. Please note that your email address is what you use to log in to the system with, so use one that you will remember!

=== Reviewing Applications ===
When you click on Dashboard, the default view you will have is a list of submissions to your chapter sorted from most recent to least recent. You can always return to this view by clicking on “Projects” on your left sidebar.

This is your filter bar, which changes what projects are displayed. You can filter projects by submission date by putting in a start and end date and then clicking “Filter”. Similarly, you can display only the projects in your shortlist by checking the “My Shortlist” box and clicking “Filter”. You can even filter for just the projects in your shortlist during a certain date range! You get the idea.The dropdown box with your chapter selected (in this example, it’s “Boston”) allows you to switch between applications for different chapters. For most folks, this will be their own chapter and then “Any”, the pool of submissions that did not specify a chapter.As you read through applications, you can highlight the ones you really like with the “Awesome” button. This is how you put projects in your shortlist. You can also see what projects everyone else in your chapter thought were awesome by clicking on “Finalists” on your left sidebar. You can also “un-Awesome” a project at anytime.

= For Deans =
As with trustees, almost all of your special options are accessible through “Dashboard”, which should be an option on your top navbar when you log in to the site. Once there, you should see a bunch of options on the left.

=== Getting your chapter on the site ===
If your chapter is not listed on the site and you would like it to be, please email webmaster@awesomefoundation.org and we'll get you all sorted.

=== Getting a List of Finalists ===
If your whole chapter is viewing submissions through the website’s system, you can use the system to automatically generate a shortlist for deliberation.In designing this system, we took into account the variety of methodologies used by different chapters and tried to keep the automation very straightforward. Basically, as a trustee reads through applications, they can mark the ones they like as “Awesome”. They can view their own shortlist of “Awesome” projects at any time.If you go to “Dashboard” and look in your Chapter menu on the left side navigation, you’ll find an option called “Finalists”. This is a table of all the projects that have been marked as “Awesome” by ''anyone''''' '''in your chapter, ordered by how many “Awesome” votes each got. You can also filter this list by date of submission.

=== Selecting a Winner ===
Once an application has been selected as the winner, you may designate it as such by clicking on the "winner" button on the dashboard. This will automatically set the funding date to the current date and will make the project appear on your chapter's page. If you would like to edit the description that shows up on the page, or change the funding date, click on the title of the chapter and then click on the edit button. At the bottom of the form, you will see two fields: one for the funding date, and one for the funded description. The funded description was originally populated from the main project description, but we recommend that you change this and keep it updated as the project progresses.

=== Changing your Trustees List ===
Because we imported the entire database from the old site, the trustees that currently appear on your chapter page are almost certainly accounts that should be deleted.

'''To create new accounts for trustees:'''
Go to “Dashboard” and you should see an option on your left sidebar menu to “Invite a Trustee”. Select the correct chapter and fill out the rest of the information and that trustee will receive an email invite to join. Once they accept the invitation, they will automatically appear as a trustee on the Chapters page and have the ability to view all applications for your chapter.

'''To remove a trustee:'''Go to “Dashboard” and click on “Members” on your left sidebar menu. From there, find the trustee you want to remove and hit “remove”.

'''Promoting a trustee to Dean:''' Currently, this is broken! Please email webmaster@awesomefoundation.org if you need to do this. Sorry!!

'''Changing a Trustee’s email:'''If one of your trustees wants to change the email address they log in with, go to “Dashboard” and click on “Members” on your left sidebar menu. From there, find the trustee you want to change the information for and click “edit” to change their email address.

=== Updating Chapter Profile ===
'''RSS Feed URL''' This is where you input the feed for your blog so that new updates are properly displayed

'''Extra Questions''' You can now append up to 3 extra questions to the application for your chapter! These will ONLY appear when the applicant selects your chapter from the dropdown menu.

=== Loading in Past Winners ===
There are two ways you can load your past winning projects into the system.1) '''Find the project in the database '''- Figure out the possible date range for when the project was submitted, put that into your dashboard, and search each page for the name of the project. Once you find it, click the “Winner for your chapter” button as usual and it should show up on your chapter page. From there, click on “edit the project” and add photos, edit the description, and '''most importantly''', change the funding date to the correct one so that your projects are in the correct chronological order.2) '''Add the project manually '''- Click on “Apply” and fill out the project form. Put the winning fellow’s name in “Name” but use your own email so that it doesn’t send them a notification. The only field that is displayed on the project’s page is the Project Details, so you can just use placeholder text for the other two fields. Make sure to set the correct funding date and add pictures if you have them.

=== Uploading Project Images ===
To upload images for a project, navigate to the project and click “Edit Project” on the top right of the project’s page. Then, scroll down to “Upload Images for your Project”, which is usually the second-to-last question on the form.The website takes most normal image filetypes: .jpg, .png, and .gif. Images will be automatically resized or cropped to fit inside the frame, which is 940x470. Using images that are as close to this size as possible will yield best results; in particular, very tall vertical images will be poorly cropped.Each image can have multiple images associated with it: just upload each one with the “Choose file” button, then hit “Save” at the bottom. The image on top will be the one that appears everywhere on the site and appears first on the project’s page. If you want, you can return to editing the project to rearrange them by dragging and dropping to the order you prefer. I would not recommend adding more than 5 images.

We want the Awesome Foundation website to be in as many languages as possible! If you're interested in helping us translate the site to a new language, just follow this guide...

===Getting set up===
# Download this file: https://raw.github.com/awesomefoundation/awesomebits/master/config/locales/en.yml (go to File -> Save Page As in your browser after clicking on the link)
# Open the file in a plain text editor
#* Mac: You can use TextEdit, but make sure it is not in rich text mode using Format -> Make Rich Text. If you can bold or italicize something in the editor, you're in the wrong mode.
#* Windows: You can use Notepad.
# Save the file as xx.yml, where xx is the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes two-letter language code] for the language you are translating.
# On the first line of the file, change "en:" to "xx:"

You are now ready to enter the translations into this new YAML file!

===The Basics===
The file is a YAML file that will tell the website how to swap out the English-centric copy for other localizations. It's mostly about direct translation of every word on the page (the copy, the comments, the navigation, and even the metadata), but it can actually go beyond that to culturally-correct numbering & dates as well!

====Simple Example====
All you really need to do is go down the file, swapping out each phrase for the proper one in your language. For example, if you were doing French, you could change:
{{thanks: "Thanks for applying!"}}
to
{{thanks: "Merci d'application!"}}

====Quotation Marks====
You may notice that some of the phrases have quotations marks around them while others do not. By default, quotation marks are not necessary. However, if your phrase has some funky symbols in it (like : or ! or < or >), you should put quotation marks around it so that it doesn't interfere with the code.

===Wrapping Up===
First, use [http://yaml-online-parser.appspot.com/ this YAML checker] to make sure that your code works.
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=Localization_Guide&diff=363Localization Guide2012-11-15T02:13:25Z
Chrysaora: Created page with "We want the Awesome Foundation website to be in as many languages as possible!
= For Trustees =
=== Logging In ===
If you scroll to the very bottom of awesomefoundation.org, you will find links that say "About & Contact", "FAQ", and "Sign In".

=== Changing Your Image ===
The picture associated with your account is automatically pulled from http://www.gravatar.com, a global avatar hosting system. Just create an account there with the email address you used to sign up to have your picture on our site! If you already have an account under a different email address, Gravatar will let you add this email address.

=== Edit Your Profile ===

=== Reviewing Applications ===

=== Getting a List of Finalists ===

=== Selecting a Winner ===

=== Updating Chapter Profile ===
'''RSS Feed URL'''This is where you input the feed for your blog so that new updates are properly displayed '''Extra Questions'''You can now append up to 3 extra questions to the application for your chapter!

=== Uploading Project Images ===
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=File:ANTD_Card.pdf&diff=351File:ANTD Card.pdf2012-09-12T20:18:50Z
Chrysaora: Awesome News Taskforce Detroit's business cards

SO...for our first event, we wanted to do something a little more private and intimate to have the change to hang out when we aren't squabbling over who to fund and actually spend some quality time with our grantees and make them feel like a part of our community. Basically, we invited all our trustees, a couple of people who are interested in becoming trustees, grantees, and gave all a plus one. We did it potluck style for beer/wine, appetizers, and dessert and used some excess money leftover from our last grant to buy some. Overall, the semi-private picnic was a great time and really built a lot of solidarity and fellowship among the the Awesome NYC community. I highly recommend it as a genre of event to pursue. "

= For Trustees =
=== Logging In ===
=== Changing Your Image ===
The picture associated with your account is automatically pulled from http://www.gravatar.com, a global avatar hosting system. Just create an account there with the email address you used to sign up to have your picture on our site! If you already have an account under a different email address, Gravatar will let you add this email address.

=== Edit Your Profile ===
In Dashboard, the very first option on your left sidebar should be “Edit My Profile”. If you click on that, you’ll be taken to a form that allows you to change the way your name is displayed, change your email address and password, and change the URL that your name is associated with on the Chapter Page.Please note that your email address is what you use to log in to the system with, so use one that you will remember!

=== Reviewing Applications ===
When you click on Dashboard, the default view you will have is a list of submissions to your chapter sorted from most recent to least recent. You can always return to this view by clicking on “Projects” on your left sidebar.[[Image:ZcSF2dUz8SNtsXOODRyfHc0xweJek2kBv0agFGrweFYFq_grQck81dT-9nbvL-3PF5cDY9wyloELKfs3AawfgAeMPQ61-Ra08BXHAGKSF3vlDKgGPXo]]This is your filter bar, which changes what projects are displayed.

=== Finalists ===

'''Promoting a trustee to Dean:'''If you want to promote one of your trustees to a Dean, go to “Dashboard” and click on “Members” on your left sidebar menu. From there, you can promote trustees to Dean.

'''Changing a Trustee’s email:'''If one of your trustees wants to change the email address they log in with, go to “Dashboard” and click on “Members” on your left sidebar menu. From there, find the trustee you want to change the information for and click “edit” to change their email address.

=== Updating Chapter Profile ===
'''RSS Feed URL'''This is where you input the feed for your blog so that new updates are properly displayed '''Extra Questions'''You can now append up to 3 extra questions to the application for your chapter!

=== Uploading Project Images ===
Chrysaorahttps://wiki.awesomestudies.org/index.php?title=State_of_the_Awesome_Team&diff=340State of the Awesome Team2012-08-15T15:08:40Z
Chrysaora: Created page with "== Current Sub-Teams == === Outcomes === The Outcomes team will be focusing on understanding, both quantitatively and qualitatively, what happens to projects once they've been g..."

== Current Sub-Teams ==

=== Outcomes ===
The Outcomes team will be focusing on understanding, both quantitatively and qualitatively, what happens to projects once they've been given a grant. It's part "what do we give grants to anyway?" and part "what Awesome successes have we had?". Anyone interested in joining this team should link up with Asad Chishti of Awesome Kingston.

=== Classification ===
The Classification team will be looking at classifying and describing applications in order to give us a better sense of what people want to with Awesome grants (and what we like giving money to). Anyone interested in joining this team should talk to Jonathan Lansey of Awesome Boston.

=== Data Management ===
The Data Management team will serve as the primary source of information, and has two main responsibilities: cleaning up the data we already have and collecting new data for us to play with. This team will tackle the problem of describing the Awesome Foundation - how many chapters we have, the composition of each chapter, and similar questions - and will be deploying a survey to the global Awesome Foundation. Anyone interested in helping out with this should contact Jacob Model, a Friend of Awesome.

=== Opening remarks ===
* We just celebrated our third birthday
* Super quick intro to the Awesome Foundation
* Christina is sharing that our logo is 8 in webdings
* Sharing last 2 Boston grants as examples
* Sharing most recent grant: Portland's Free the Billboards
* Last 2 days have been Awesome Summit Assemble
* 47 chapters, people from all over the world

==== What makes us Awesome ====
What makes the Awesome Foundation awesome?
# Low barriers to entry, for both applicants and participants
## Trustees aren't philanthropists, don't see themselves that way
## Makes philanthropy accessible
## Easy app for grantees, people who don't think of themselves as grant recipients
## "I don't have an $100,000 idea, but everyone has a $1000 idea"
# P2P giving from one average person to another
## Grant recipients have become trustees, it's interchangeable
# Constant experimentation
## We all innovate on the model
## Unofficial motto: "what's the worst that could happen?"
## Anyone can start an AF, huge amount of biodiversity
# Fun
## It's actually fun to be in the Awesome Foundation

==== IHAS ====
[[IHAS]] is a backend for the Awesome Foundation that allows the AF to maintain its nebulous, loosely organized nature. IHAS does things so that chapters don't have to. Basically, IHAS is [http://c2910532.r32.cf0.rackcdn.com/84779-4f0f896236e5c-large.jpg Kitten Voltron].

==== Awesome Summit: Assemble ====
* 26/45 active chapters
* 4 fledgling chapters
* 5 continents
* We have exactly exponential growth so far
* Most of the time spent in working groups, one of the most productive Christina has ever been to
* Meta-Awesome grant - winner Ponzi Awesome

==== Awesome Summit: Connect ====
Goals:
# Build community
# Cover unique issues
# Build organizational APIs
